The PTS Invitational
Wednesday 8th - Friday 10th June 2011
Former Ryder Cup Star Lands PTS Invitational Title
The South Staffordshire Golf Club once again staged The PTS Invitational over three days between 8th - 10th June. Covered again by the Sky TV cameras, 90 professionals partnered for 2 days by an Amateur partner tackled the demanding course and South Staffs Head Professional Peter Baker, credited an improved putter for his narrow victory.

Simon Lilly, the Wellingborough Pro, blew away the rest of the field during the first round, carding an almost flawless five-under-par 66, including four birdies in his first six holes, which rocketed him to the top of a leaderboard where no other player managed to break par in showery conditions.

Home advantage paid off for Baker in the second round as his scintillating five-under-par 66 saw him move menacingly up the leaderboard to within two shots of first round leader Simon Lilly. Seven birdies and just two dropped shots for the pre-tournament favourite took him to four-under-par after 36 holes.

Teeing off later in the day, Wellingborough's Lilly showed serene progress and looked set to take a bigger lead going into the final day, but a double bogey at the tricky 17th reduced the gap and left an exciting finish in store.

Just two other players managed to remain under par - Lincoln's Paul Streeter, at two-under and Leicestershire's Ian Lyner who shot a superb 67 to move to one-under for the tournament after two days.

Playing in the last group with Lilly and Streeter on the final day, Baker produced a devastating birdie blitz around the turn to take a two shot advantage heading into the deciding holes. A tense back nine followed when Lilly's birdie at the 16th brought him within one stroke but a curling 12 foot putt for another at the last somehow rolled around the cup leaving a relieved Baker two putts for victory.

The former Ryder Cup player had added a final round 68 to rounds of 72 and 66 for a 7-under par total of 206 to claim a one stroke victory over Wellingborough's Simon Lilly.

"The first round was frustrating with a few loose shots out there, but the last two days have been steadier and the putts have dropped nicely too, I'm pleased with the win but even happier with the success of the event, it's been a great week," said Baker.

The winner's sentiments were echoed by main sponsors Plumbing Trade Supplies (PTS) and its Managing Director, Kelvin Stevens, whose customers were taking part in the two day amateur event were very satisfied ones.

"We were over-subscribed this year for clients of ours taking part, they all had a great time, and there's already a number of them asking about next years event, its been a big success for us once again."

The lengthened course, featuring four new tees, proved to be very tough with only three of the Professionals managing to break par after 54 holes in the PGA Midland Region's first Order of Merit event of the 2011 season, which carried a bumper prize purse of £17,000 donated by main sponsor PTS.

Amateur Mike Ankers won the two day Pro-Am event with PGA Cup player Danny Taylor (Swingers Golf Centre) after a two round -17 total saw them edge out Simon Lilly and Amateur Tom Pearson by just a single shot.
